Mechanical refrigeration systems are an important factor against global climate change. With a typical working temperature down to or below of -75ºC, freeze dryer designs should be updated along the transition to a green and sustainable economy. In the European Union, leading this change, most common refrigerants like R-23, R-404A, R-410A and R-507A are already banned or restricted in most applications. This article will address how new alternatives in industrial refrigeration systems are now ready to comply with current and future regulations, applicable for both new and existing freeze dryers.
